Elbow Pain
What is Elbow Pain?
Elbow pain is a condition caused by the tearing of either the ligaments or tendons connecting the muscles and bones in the elbow area due to repetitive and forceful activities. Such activities include playing tennis, golf, baseball, etc. At times, this is also due to inflammation and infection affecting structures near the elbow, especially the synovial membrane surrounding the bursa. When bacteria surround this membrane, infection sets in and brings severe tenderness and localized pain to the elbow area.
The Symptoms
Pain in the elbow is usually manifested with severe tenderness upon rotation or movement of the elbow. Together with localized pain, signs of infection are also apparent. Such symptoms include fever, redness, warmth, and swelling around the elbow area, especially if the cause of the pain is due to inflammation like bursitis or epicondylitis. Another symptom is rigidity of the elbow and pain upon rotation or swinging.
Possible Causes
Elbow pain is brought about by different causes. Usually, injuries to the elbow are the major contributors to elbow pain. These injuries could be due to frequent continuous pressures on the tendons of the elbow and overuse during activities involving repeated elevation and rotation of the forearm and the arm. When injuries are already present in this area, twisting motions repeatedly done could elicit the pain. Another cause of elbow pain is the inflammation of the epicondyle, which is the point of attachment of the tendons of the forearm to the bony prominence of the inner elbow. Another cause is the inflammation of the bursa found at the tip of the elbow. When bacteria lodge into this membrane, inflammation occurs and brings forth severe pain. Sprains and strains to the ligaments connecting the particular ends of the radius and ulna also cause elbow pain.
Am I at Risk?
This condition is usually seen among racket players, but it is not limited to tennis players since this is also evident among baseball players and golfers. These individuals are at higher risk since activities they’re engaged in stressful, forceful, and repetitive movements of the elbow. Accidents affecting the elbow, such as strains and sprains incurred after activities, can also promote severe elbow tenderness.
Elbow pain is prevented if proper techniques and preventions are done. Warming up is highly necessary when doing forceful and stressful activities. However, if the pain persists and inflammation does not wear out as expected, it is recommended to consult a physician right away. Call (+65) 6471 2698.
